PM hands over Shyamji Varma's reinstatement certificate to CM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday afternoon handed over certificate of reinstatement of Indian nationalist Shyamji Krishna Varma in the British Bar to chief minister Anandiben Patel at a function held at Bhuj Air Force Station. Patel is also president of Shri Shyamji Kishanverma Memorial `Kranti Tirth' in Varma's home town of Mandvi. The certificate will be kept at the memorial.

Kutch: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday afternoon handed over certificate of reinstatement of Indian nationalist Shyamji Krishna Varma in the British Bar to chief minister Anandiben Patel at a function held at Bhuj Air Force Station. After the function, Modi went to Dhordo to kick-start the three-day All India DGP and IGP meet at the tent city about 90km from district headquarters Bhuj.
Modi said many have laid down their lives for freedom of the country . “Shyamji Krishna Varma, the brave son of Kutch was one of them who took up the fight for independence on foreign soil,“ the PM added.Modi began his address by extending greetings in Kutchhi language, “Ki Eyo Bhaio ane Bheno“.
Shyamji Krishna Varma as the worshipper of both `Shastra' (scriptures) and `Shastra' (weapons), said Modi, adding that Varma was the only nonBrahmin to be conferred the degree of` Pandit in Varanasi. “Mahatma Gandhi and Shyamji Krishna Varma were the only two persons, who were debarred by the British Bar,“ he added. In August 2003, Modi had brought back the mortal remains of Varma and his wife Bhanumati from Geneva and handed it over to Shyamji Krishna Varma Kranti Tirth in his home town Mandvi. Verma died in March 1930.
Varma was born in 1857, the year when first armed revolt against the British Empire took place. “Varma gave the concept of Home Rule and established `India House' in London to voice the demand for independence,“ Modi said.
“He published a newspaper in London and wrote aggressively against the British Empire. Worried by this, his certificate to practice law was revoked by the British Bar,“ added Modi. Modi said that before his visit to UK in November, the British government had decided to reinstate Varma and actually handed him over the reinstatement certificates on November 12.
The Prime Minister said that there was a time when even locals did not visit the Kutch desert which has now become center of attraction for foreign tourists.
`Congress never remembered Varma'
Chief minister Anandiben Patel while accepting the reinstatement certificate of Late Shyamji Krishna Varma from Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi said that after independence Congress did not remember the sacrifices made by the great son of Kutch. “For 56 years since independence Congress did not remember him. It was Narendrabhai who brought back his mortal remains from Geneva and later on the reinstatement certificate,“ added Patel.
