Obsessed with marriage, Canada-returned man punches mother to death in Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad: A Canada-returned man's obsession with marriage ended with him murdering his mother in the Ghatlodia area of the city on Tuesday night. Furious that his parents were not finding him a bride, 31-year-old Vraj Contractor allegedly rained punches on his mother, Parul, until she collapsed. The 55-year-old woman was rushed to hospital but declared dead on arrival.Following a complaint lodged by his younger sister, the Sola police arrested him for murder.Vraj, a resident of Vardhmankrupa flats near Sattadhar crossroads, had moved to Canada in 2018 on a student visa. He pursued studies, worked part-time jobs, and returned to Ahmedabad earlier this year, moving back in with his parents and 25-year-old sister, Nakshi.Vraj's father works as a manager in a Gandhinagar hotel, while Nakshi is employed with a stock brokerage firm.According to police, Vraj's violent behaviour at home had become a pattern. "In recent weeks he had attacked his mother four to five times. Just two days before the fatal assault, he had fought with his sister. He allegedly hurled a steel bottle at Nakshi during yet another argument. The family, however, never approached the police," said Sola inspector K N Bhukhan. On Tuesday, the quarrel escalated fatally. Police said Vraj's anger boiled over after he once again demanded that his parents find him a bride. His father was away at work. "In a fit of rage, he punched Parul repeatedly in her back and stomach. The blows caused massive internal bleeding. Despite efforts by Nakshi and a neighbour to rush her to a nearby hospital, doctors could only declare her brought dead," said the inspector. Following Parul's death, Nakshi lodged a complaint against Vraj under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, leading to his arrest. Police will probe whether Vraj's violent streak was rooted in psychological issues. Inspector Bhukhan said, "Vraj will undergo medical tests to review his psychological and other conditions. He has said that he feels guilty about his actions."
