While Patani is linked with RSS, Shah, who was once supported by pro-Congress members, has been associated with the BJP for quite some time.
Patani's victory is crucial considering that he had taken on BJP's faction which is enjoying majority on the campus. Shah had only recently won the syndicate elections for the fifth consecutive time. Shah bagged 60 votes during the syndicate elections in February but this time he received only 32 votes in his kitty.
Patani bagged 41 votes. Three government officials, including director of technical education, director of employment and training and commissioner of higher education also cast their votes.
Monday's elections witnessed high drama with some pro-Congress senate members raising the issue of exclusion of a governmentappointed senate member of the ABVP from the electoral rolls.
