Ahmedabad: Dalit agitation leader and convener of Una Dalit Atyachar Ladat Samiti (UDALS), Jignesh Mevani, resigned from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday. His resignation follows allegations by the BJP, dalit rights and NGOs that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's party was driving the protests over Una.
"I have resigned from AAP as people of the BJP, some dalit rights activists and NGOs had started a negative campaign against the dalit agitation just because of my AAP membership.
Their negative campaign harmed the cause of our agitation which started spontaneously after the Una flogging incident," Mevani said. He said that AAP had never tried to gain political mileage from the dalit agitation in Gujarat. "There were some jealous people who could not see the success of the agitation. I hope they will now help to the community's agitation and stop trying to make fun of us," the dalit stir leader said. Mevani had joined the AAP two years ago.
