Ahmedabad: After the arrest of five persons and a daylong interrogation on allegations of smuggling foreign currency, worth Rs2.2 crore, out of the country, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) was shocked, when Sabarmati Central Jail officials informed them that foreign currency had been recovered from one of the accused in prison. Now, DRI has approached court to gain custody of the money.
The court has kept hearing on Thursday.
50 Saudi riyal notes of 500 denomination (valued at Rs 4.37 lakh) were found on Bushra Rahman by the jail staff. The money was hidden in her undergarments, and DRI investigators had failed to find the money. Last week, DRI had arrested five people including three women, Mohammad Waqar, Mohammad Azhar, Bushra Rahman, Roshni Khan and Rabia Khatoon, for attempting to smuggle unaccounted foreign currency worth Rs 2.20 crore through the international terminal of the city airport.
