Hit and run: Dumper mows down pedestrian in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident involving a dumper near Vadaj Circle in the early hours of Wednesday, triggering a chase by locals who tried to intercept the vehicle but failed to stop it.Dhiren Parmar, 37, a resident of Hanumanpura in old Vadaj, stepped out early in the morning and was returning home after having tea when the accident occurred around 5.30am. According to police, a speeding dumper hit him near the circle and fled immediately after the collision. The impact caused severe head and body injuries, leading to his death on the spot. Locals rushed to the scene, and some of them chased the dumper on two-wheelers through nearby roads. However, the driver managed to escape.Based on a complaint filed by his wife, Bhavna Parmar, B Division traffic police registered an offence of hit-and-run against the unidentified driver of the dumper bearing a Gujarat registration number. Police said the case was filed under sections related to causing death by negligence, rash driving, and failure to stop and assist the victim under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act.Officials said CCTV footage from the area was being examined to identify the driver and trace the vehicle. Further investigation is underway.In other incidents, a car climbed onto a footpath in Jamalpur late on Tuesday night, while a motorcycle hit a scooter in Navrangpura, leaving one person seriously injured in the wee hours on Wednesday. Police have begun inquiries in both cases.
