AHMEDABAD: "Happiness is the interval between two spells of desires. One desire has been fulfilled and the other is yet to be fulfilled," said revenue secretary, the

Government of India

, Dr Hasmukh

Adhia

. He was delivering the third lecture on 'Attaining Real Happiness in Life' at the 24th AMA Week lecture series, on Sunday.

Adhia elaborated on how desires keep multiplying once you give in to them. "We all have desires and once they are fulfilled we are thrilled," he said. "Are we happy then? No. Another desire follows and many more keep coming." But how does one get out of the vicious cycle of desires that fetch only transitory happiness? Adhia said, "The fault lies in the state of mind which identifies with the body and not with the soul."

Adhia said: "Guided by mind we take the wrong roadmap, ignoring the purity of Atma, the soul." He said to be happy in the true sense one must be Sattvic and practise Karma Yoga. "Do your duty and share what you have with society," he said. Speaking on the purity of the soul, Adhia said, "Atma is the only entity in our personality that can give real happiness. It is 'Sat-Chit-Anand'.

Atma

is common to us and Brahma." That which misguides us is Anatma or which is represented by body-mind-world, he said.

Atma leads to real happiness while objects lead to restlessness and dismay. "Real happiness is within you," Adhia said.
