Gujarat ranks third with 2,675 hospitals under PM-JAY

Ahmedabad: Amid the Khyati Hospital controversy, where two patients died after angioplasty procedures covered by Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), data tabled in Lok Sabha shows that in the past six years, the state has debarred three hospitals from the scheme. However, this number does not include the seven, including Khyati Hospital, that were debarred last month. According to the data, 2,675 hospitals have been empanelled to provide treatment under the scheme in Gujarat. Of these, 923 or 36% of the hospitals are in the private sector. In 2021-22, private hospital enrolment reached its peak with 158 joining the scheme. A total of 135 private hospitals enrolled in 2020-21. When the initiative commenced in 2018-19, 1,450 government hospitals and 312 private medical facilities had enrolled. Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of empanelled hospitals at 5,837, followed by 3,552 in Karnataka. Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu took the third, fourth and fifth positions. Madhya Pradesh leads the nation in debarred hospitals with 439 facilities facing action, according to official data. Uttar Pradesh follows closely with 416 hospitals while Maharashtra has 387 such hospitals. "The reasons for the debarment of a hospital include multiple complaints, initiation of a probe for malpractice, overcharging for any procedure or breach of any protocol.
