AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court has kept July 27 for starting final hearing of the revision application filed by Zakia Jafri against the lower court’s clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 58 others in the 2002 riots.
Justice Sonia Gokani on Tuesday asked Zakia’s lawyers to provide the English translation of those documents on which they intend to rely during the proceedings in future.

They have been asked to provide the papers by July 17 and the court will take up the matter for hearing 10 days later, sources said.
The matter had been adjourned for nearly a year because of the translation of bulky case records from Gujarati. Earlier, both the parties – Zakia and the Supreme Court-appointed SIT – were asked to provide the translation but the court was not satisfied with the quality of translation. When the documents were translated at the behest of the court registry, Zakia’s lawyers in March took exception to the veracity of the translation.
After the metropolitan court upheld the closure report filed by the SIT in December 2013, Zakia approached the high court in March last year against the lower court’s decision.
The apex court had asked the SIT to probe the conspiracy in the 2002 riots alleged by Zakia Jafri, widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, in her complaint. After the state police did not register her complaint in 2006, she had moved courts demanding investigation against Modi and others.
