AHMEDABAD: After getting reprimanded by the Gujarat high court for its reluctance to establish a dedicated helpline for citizens to report police misconduct, the state government finally informed the court on Friday that it will introduce a specific phone number for the service and establish a separate control room to address such complaints.
The HC had been advocating a dedicated helpline based on the recommendations of the amicus curiae after the court filed a suo motu PIL following an incident where police and TRB jawans allegedly extorted Rs 60,000 from a family near Ognaj toll plaza.
During the hearing, the court reminded the government of another case of extortion by policemen when a person from outside the state landed in Gujarat to watch the cricket world cup final with a liquor bottle.
Last month, the high court reprimanded the state government for its reluctance to create a separate helpline, asking it not to "camouflage" the helpline number.
The state government then came up with a couple of options, including extending the existing 100 helpline.
However, Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Aniruddha Mayee insisted on a dedicated helpline for registering complaints against policemen and TRB jawans.
The court felt that the number should be separate from the existing helplines - 100, 112 and 1064 - which are used to seek help from the police or to report corrupt government officials.
