AHMEDABAD: The chief metropolitan magistrate on Tuesday ordered police to inquire into a complaint accusing former

IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt

of 'defrauding people by raising funds to help him and his family'.

The court sought an inquiry report from the Shahibaug police inspector in three months based on an application filed by one Amitkumar Solanki, who demanded an FIR under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code against the jailed former cop. Solanki claims to have donated Rs 11,000 and then helped Bhatt crowdfund, as he had been appealing to people on social media. Solanki told the court that he made a complaint before higher police authorities when he learned that Bhatt was actually converting black money into accounted money by depositing unaccounted cash into the accounts meant to deposit donations. He alleged that Bhatt has been cheating people and demanded action against him.

Solanki on Tuesday gave a statement before the court with regard to his complaint. After his verification, the court ordered the inquiry under Section 202 of the CrPC.

Solanki claimed that Bhatt aimed to raise Rs 1.5 crore by running a campaign under the heading 'Indians Fight for Justice'. He told the court that nearly Rs 26 lakh has been collected through crowdfunding. He accused Bhatt of gathering funds by "arousing communal passions and misusing political views of a section of the people".

In his complaint, Solanki has in detail mentioned the status of criminal cases against Bhatt; the types of cases against him; how his wife Shweta Bhatt garners political support from Kerala etc. He emphasized that Bhatt is not a witness in any post-Godhra riots case and questioned the need for security cover for him and his family.
