In a strongly-worded resignation letter addressed to party president Sonia Gandhi, Patel said it is almost like the Congress does not want to do anything good for

Gujarat

and at the national level, the party has only played a role of creating roadblocks when people of the country wanted solutions to issues like the Ram temple at Ayodhya, revocation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and implementation of Goods and Service Tax (GST).

Stopping sort of praising PM Narendra Modi, Hardik Patel said in his letter, "When it came to issues related to India, Gujarat and my Patidar community, Congress' only stand was to oppose whatever government of India led by PM Narendra Modi did."

Commenting on nepotism within the party, Patel said, "It is unfortunate that ... big leaders of Congress in Gujarat are far away from issues of the state, but are more focussed on ensuring that chicken sandwich for leaders who have come from Delhi, is delivered on time."

Terming the actions of Gujarat Congress leaders as a "betrayal of the people of Gujarat," Patel said in his letter that "Gujarat Congress leaders have weakened the party, diluted many issues of public importance - all for humongous personal financial gains."

He added, "Whenever I went among the youth, I was always asked why I was in a party which constantly insulted Gujaratis- be it in the business sector, in matters of religion and even in politics. Gujaratis can never forget how the Congress party has insulted Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel."

Hardik Patel shot to fame in 2015 when he spearheaded the Patidar reservation stir in 2015. He joined the Congress party in 2019 and was elevated to the post of GPCC working president in 2020. Even as assembly elections are scheduled to be held later this year in Gujarat, he has been critical of the Congress leadership for the past few weeks even as there are indications of him gravitating towards the BJP.
