Gujarat BJP goes into poll mode
AHMEDABAD: Even as Gujarat BJP dissidents raised their pitch, senior party leaders on Sunday called on their rank and file to fan out among voters across the state, thus signalling the possibility early assembly elections in the state.
Addressing the concluding session of the two-day meeting of the party's executive committee at Kevadia Colony, senior leaders like BJP national general secretary Om Mathur and chief minister Narendra Modi appealed to cadres to leave no stone unturned in convincing people about the government's performance in the last four years.

Although no direct reference was made on the possibility of early elections, Mathur said, "The state assembly elections are scheduled for December 2007, but it is the right time for leaders to go out among the electorate and tell them about the achievements of the BJP.
"Except south Gujarat strong man Kashiram Rana, all prominent leaders of the dissident group, led by former chief minister Keshubhai Patel, were absent from this crucial meeting held for the first time after BJP's sweeping victory in the municipal and panchayat elections.
The absentees included former chief ministers Keshubhai Patel and Suresh Mehta, former union minister and MP Harin Pathak, party's national secretary Rajendrasinh Rana and former state BJP minister Gordhan Zadaphia.
The meeting also adopted a resolution complimenting Modi for a series of bold steps taken by the government, particularly on increasing the height of Narmada dam to 121 meters, the gas find in the Krishna Godavari basin and improved law and order situation in the state.
State BJP general secretary Jayantilal Barot told senior functionaries to organise zonal meetings in their areas to increase mass contact.
The party also decided to hold anti-terrorism programmes to protest against the killing of innocent people in Doda in Jammu & Kashmir. The first major demonstration would be organised by the BJP's Yuva Morcha on June 29 in Ahmedabad.
