AHMEDABAD: This sure was a case of mistaken identity. The Gujarat University (GU) awarded the gold medal for topping in MBBS to one Dhaval Kiritkumar Patel from NHL Municipal Medical College only to realize it had gone to the wrong guy.Apparently Dhaval went to the GU authorities to complain that they had got his father's name wrong and that the certificate said 'Dhaval Jyotishchandra Patel'.
After investigations, authorities at GU realised that the medal was indeed meant for Dhaval Jyotishchandra Patel from BJ Medical College and had gone to the other Dhaval by mistake!
This goof-up happened during the 56th convocation of GU conducted in January. Dhaval Kiritkumar Patel was not surprised because he had been academically very sound and had stood second in MBBS. It was only after the convocation ceremony that Dhaval Kiritkumar Patel checked the certificate and found his middle name was wrong. Assuming it was a printing error, he approached the GU authorities. "After Dhaval wanted the university to issue a new certificate with his correct middle name, we initiated the procedure. It was on the second day after the convocation that we realised that the certificate which carried the name Dhaval Jyotishchandra Patel was actually the correct certificate, given to the wrong student," said a source from the university. The mistake was done by the Accounts department, which was given the duty of dispatching the convocation invitation to the meritorious students. By mistake, the department sent the invitation of Dhaval Jyotishchandra Patel to the name after his which was Dhaval Kiritkumar Patel. The university has taken the medal back from the wrong Dhaval and would hand it to the right man. Neither Dhavals were available for comment. They were away on vacation, but Dhaval Kiritkumar's friend told TOI that he was a brilliant student and was second to the other Dhaval by only around 600 marks.
