GNLU student suicide: Warden, nurse suspended after students protest
Ahmedabad: Hundreds of students at Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) confronted the university authorities on Thursday and demanded immediate action to address the lapses identified in the recent student suicide case. Vansh Gaint, 21, a third-year student of the five-year integrated LLB course was found dead in his dorm room on Tuesday. The tragedy sent shockwaves through the GNLU campus. After Thursday's standoff, which continued for over an hour, the authorities suspended the hostel warden and nurse and accepted the students' demands. In a mail addressed to the students, registrar Nitin Malik wrote, "Dear students, as a university, we acknowledge certain shortcomings that have been brought to our knowledge with respect to the tragic incident that occurred on the night of March 17-18, 2025." "...As declared, the hostel warden and nurse on duty that night are suspended with immediate effect, pending inquiry," the email said. The mail went on to mention that there will be an ambulance stationed 24X7 outside the hostels for boys and girls, emergency numbers will be notified for facilities, and all essential equipment shall be made available in the hostels. The authorities also said that a doctor and counsellors will be made available to the students and staff, door-opening equipment will be made available in hostels and a student activities committee (SAC) will be formed.Earlier on Thursday, the students of GNLU issued a press note titled "Tragedy at GNLU: Institutional Apathy, Lack of Medical Infrastructure, Administrative Negligence, and Suppression of Student Rights Lead to the Death of Vansh Gaint."The note said that the warden downplayed the situation after the suicide was brought to his notice, at 11.50pm, leading to a 25-minute delay. "The warden abandoned the rescue attempt midway leaving the students with the responsibility of saving their friend. At 12.19am, students broke open the door, cut the cloth the victim was hanging from and laid him down. The medical staff arrived only at 12.25am — 30 minutes too late," the note mentioned.
