AHMEDABAD: A 22-year-old girl committed suicide by jumping into Sabarmati river at 1.30 am on Monday from Sardar Bridge. Primary investigations revealed that she was scolded by her mother for fasting during Navratri. She committed suicide after returning from garba, said police officials.
According to Ellisbridge police station officials, the body of Deepali Baraiya, a resident of Bhilvaas, Kochrab, was found by fire brigade officials from the river near Jamalpur at 9 am on Monday.
She was dressed in chaniya choli, said officials and could be identified from the driving license in her purse.
"According to her parents she had been to a garba venue in Paldi at 9 pm on Sunday. When she didn't return home and could not be contacted, they informed police officials at 2.30 am about the incident. We contacted them upon discovery of the body," said a police official.
Deepali had quit studies after class XII and was working in a private company. She was scolded by her mother for fasting during Navratri and going for garba every night.
"According to her family members, it might be the reason for her suicide. However, we have not found any suicide note from her," said the official.
This is the second incident of suicide by a woman in two days where Navratri was said to be the triggering factor. On Sunday, Bhavna Bhatt, 42, a resident of Maniasa, jumped before a train at 8.40 pm. Bhatt, mother of two, was scolded by her husband for being over-enthusiastic about garbas. He even refused to take her to the garba venues. She was asked to be at home, said Amraiwadi police station officials who are investigating the case.
