Three fraud cases registered, losses exceed 5L

Ahmedabad: Amdavadis continued to fall prey to con men, online and offline, with three incidents reported from the city on Friday.
The victim of the latest crime was Maulik Patel, a resident of Ghodasar, who lost Rs 2.84 lakh to cybercrooks between Oct 17 and 21. The 44-year-old told Isanpur police that he received an SMS with a link offering reward points on an Axis Bank credit card. He clicked on the link and received a call from a person who got Patel to divulge his full name, 16-digit credit card and CVV numbers, and made various transactions online amounting to Rs 2.84 lakh. Patel then filed a complaint against the unidentified person.
Using a similar modus operandi, cybercriminals duped Rishikesh Shah, a resident of Shahibaug, of Rs 92,096 on Sep 9. In a police complaint, the 38-year-old said he received a call from someone claiming to be from Axis Bank Credit Card Service Centre and sent a link offering credit card rewards. The person obtained details of Shah's credit card through the link and made various online transactions.
In the third complaint, a 23-year-old resident of Kasturbanagar lost Rs 2 lakh after being deceived by a consultant who promised to get him a visa and job in Singapore. In a complaint with Gomtipur police, he said that he had paid the money in instalments to the consultant, a woman residing in Naroda, between July 31 and Aug 4 this year. However, when the complainant saw no progress on either the visa or the job, he asked the consultant to return the money. The accused individual allegedly refused to do so and the complainant approached the police.
