Former Godhra MLA denied bail

Ahmedabad: A city sessions court denied anticipatory bail to former Godhra MLA Haresh Bhatt and a builder named Sunny Patel, in connection with a complaint filed with Vasna police against them for an alleged illegal sale of land.

A lawyer, Kanti Pandit, lodged an FIR accusing Bhatt and others of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. Pandit, the chairman of Manjushree (Vasna) Owners’ Association, accused Bhatt of selling the piece of land to Patel for Rs 1.55 crore though they are not members of the association.

Additional sessions judge P M Unadkat denied pre-arrest bail to Bhatt and Patel with the observation that economic offences are on the rise. Granting anticipatory bail to them would send a wrong signal to society. The legal protection against possible arrest would also cause issues with the process of custodial interrogation, the court said.
