AHMEDABAD: Dr Preksha Bhatt, 25, who had to leave her medical internship midway in China following the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan last year, says she feels miserable for not being able to put her studies to use in treating the flood of corona patients.

Bhatt, an MBBS intern from Southern Medical University, China, says that she is taking the

Foreign Medical Graduate Exam

(FMGE) mandated for foreign-trained medicos to practise or intern in hospitals in India.

“If the

government

relaxes the norms and allows us, like the local MBBS students, to intern at

Covid

hospitals, we can help the suffering citizens of

Gujarat

,” Bhatt said.

“We understand there is a scarcity of staff in the makeshift Covid-19 hospitals. We do not even want any remuneration. We are ready to serve free in rural areas where the pandemic is tightening its grip in the current surge.”

In fact, members of the Indian Foreign Medical Students (IFMS) Welfare MCI Gurukul Trust have been actively lobbying the central and state governments to lower the qualifying percentage of the FMGE from the current 50% to 30% to make 1 lakh doctors available in the pandemic in one stroke.

“The qualifying percentile of NEET-PG has been lowered over the years to 30,” says Neel Bhatt, a student of Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine and a local representative of FMGs. Bhatt added: “If the government wishes, it can make a large number of medical graduates and interns available for Covid duties in rural areas.”

Bhatt went on to say: “If the Gujarat government lowers the FMGE pass percentage requirement to 30% or waives the prerequisite of clearing the Indian exam for registration, some 2,500-3,000 interns and doctors can be instantly available for posting in Covid hospitals.” FMG representatives had met health minister Nitin Patel and education minister

Bhupendrasinh Chudasama

last year to raise the issue.

Vama Patel, a medico from Southern Medical University, China, who could not clear the FMGE last year due to Covid in the family, says she is willing to do her internship in a Covid hospital gratis. “Gujarat needs doctors and we need permission to treat patients,” Patel said. “We were trained by US professors in China in the English language. We are ready for work, we just need permission.”

The FMGs said both the government and doctors will benefit in relaxing the rules at a time when governments are actively roping in students not just from medicine but also from allied fields such as ayurveda, physiotherapy, and dentistry to work in Covid facilities.

Why are we even comparing FMGs here, during the times of COVID. AYUSH doctors are being allowed in order to serve the nation under COVID crisis, we are allopathic MBBS doctors ourself. I've seen alot of FMGs who gets settled down outside of India because of being compared by the Indian medical staff for being a FMG in India. I've seen people scoring in 500s in NEET-UG and still opting for medical seats outside of India. Foreign is a different route and every single one of us knew we are going to get compared with our fellow Indian medical students as well, but most of us have different reasons to opt foreign over India for UG and still coming back to India to serve our nation, not to get discriminated as we being done in almost each examination in India on the grounds of reservation.Instead of demanding to lower the required marks percentile, we should demand for the increase in number of times of examinations to be held in a year, so that we all stand equal grounds but in a much faster way. Being an FMG myself, I wouldn't want our own Indians to judge us on the basis of our studies, if the 50% are to be mandatory, let that be, we all should focus more on clearing the examination to show we too are incompetent. Also, Indian government should ease the parameters and documentation time after passing the examination, as I've seen FMGs who have passed the examination but have not received any letter to join the hospital ward or couldn't get themself registered in MCI. The system just needs to be a bit fast to save the nation out of crisis. We all know India has entered its second wave, we don't know how long would it be, and would there be anymore peak/wave in a near future, so its better if we all should get prepare for it, this is the time, let's we all work together to change the system and help save our nation out of COVID crisis.Kudos!
