AHMEDABAD: Police arrested five persons on Monday for the murder of a 20-year-old youth who had succumbed to injures in an attack over an eve-teasing incident on October 14. The victim, Manoj Desai, a resident of Sheshnagar Society near Vastrapur railway station in Satellite, was admitted to a private hospital on SG Highway in wee hours of Thursday.
He had already named Fulesh Rabari, Kalpesh Rabari, Mahesh Rabari, Dinesh Rabari and Shailesh Rabari, all residing near Vastrapur railway station as his attackers.
VR Toliya, assistant commissioner of police, A Division, said that the assailants and victims were close friends. "The trouble started with Kalpesh objecting to Manoj making a pass at one of his cousins. Manoj was a frequent visitor at Kalpesh's house and was considered a member of the family. Kalpesh was deeply hurt when Manoj, a married man, eyed his cousin. He wanted to teach him a lesson and hence made a plan during Navratri," Toliya said.
The attackers picked up Manoj from a garba ground in Satellite in a car. On the way they picked up two more persons from Vastrapur. On the pretext of going to a fresh destination, they took Manoj to Vayna village in Ahmedabad district and beat him up severely with lathis.
"They did not want to kill him. They had only intended to make him realize his mistake. However, as he remained unabashed, he was beaten black and blue. When they realized that he had been beaten up too much, two of the group members took him to a private hospital on SG Highway and got him admitted. His family members were also informed on Thursday. However, he did not survive and succumbed later that day," said MR Gupta, inspector of Satellite police station.
Except for Dinesh Rabari, all accused were nabbed by the investigators from SG Highway on Monday. "Search is on for Rabari and questioning of other accused has started. We have charged all of them with murder. Forensic science experts have found blood stains from the car as corroborative evidence in the case," said Toliya.
