AHMEDABAD: Parts of south Gujarat, Saurashtra and some parts of north Gujarat received fresh spells of rain on Sunday. However, the city remained dry as the wait for a second round of rains got longer.

On Sunday, a group in Amraiwadi performed Parjanya Yag — prayers to invoke the

rain god

where devotees sit in vessels filled with water while performing rituals — and a large number of devotees participated. Harshad Patel, a social worker from Amraiwadi, said that with acute water shortage experienced by the state and farmers’ requirement for a good spell, they prayed for normal monsoon.

“Such years also teach us and the administration about better measures for rainwater harvesting and conserving every drop of rainwater received,” he said.

Another group in Ramol conducted mass prayer for rain. “We prayed to Varun Dev (rain god) for good rain in the state and overall India. We still have major dependence on the agricultural sector and we also read in news that a majority of the dams in the state are near-empty. In such a scenario, only a good season can prevent inflation and joblessness,” said Sanjay Mishra, one of the participants at the event.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) website, the state is experiencing two systems — one cyclonic circulation over north central Maharashtra and neighbourhood whereas another over central parts of Rajasthan. These systems brought rains to parts of Gujarat.

Senior Met department officials said there is possibility of light to moderate rainfall in almost all the districts of Gujarat including Ahmedabad on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as the southern system is expected to move northwards.

IMD has issued warning for heavy to very heavy rains in Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Gir Somnath along with Union territories of Diu, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli on Monday.
