AHMEDABAD: A team of women police got custody of Dr Hemang Shah, one of the two accused of sex determination racket, from the V S Hospital on Monday where he was admitted for high blood pressure and diabetes. Dr Shah was questioned by the investigators. Another team conducted search of the premises of hospital and residences of Dr Shah and Ashok Patel, another accused in the case.
On May 18, the duo was caught in a sting operation conducted by district health department at Umiya Nursing Home in Naroda. Patel worked as an agent and middleman for a three-month-old pregnant woman, who wanted the sex determination conducted, after charging Rs 9,000. Dr Shah had used his portable sonography machine in the hospital and conducted the test illegally. Dr Patel was soon shifted to the VS Hospital after arrest due to his medical condition.
Chetna Chaudhary, inspector of women police station, told TOI that Dr Shah has been brought in for questioning on Monday. "We want to know how he was involved in the act and what amount he would get from the test. It has been established earlier that he was using a sonography machine not registered with health department," she said.
She added that a team was sent to the clinic and residences of the accused for search. "We found leaflets having information about the tests in a discreet language. Patel has admitted that they would secretly advertise the fact that the hospital was conducting illegal tests. This is an important evidence in the case. Search for other evidences is on," she added.
