Demonetized notes of Rs 64 lakh seized

AHMEDABAD: Special Operations Group (SOG) of Gandhinagar police on Friday seized demonetized currencies in denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 worth Rs 64.49 lakh from a car near Pethapur village of the district.


Officials said that they got an input that two persons were carrying a stock of the demonetized notes in a car. A police team rushed there but by the time the duo had fled from the spot leaving behind the currency.

Last week, Surat police seized around Rs 3.85 crore in demonetized notes and arrested a man. During a routine checking of vehicles in Rander locality of Surat, the notes were seized from a car in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations.

Earlier in June, Chandkheda police of Ahmedabad city seized Rs 99.99 lakh demonetized currency from four persons. As many as 12,800 demonetized notes of Rs 500 denomination and 3,599 scrapped notes of Rs 1,000 denomination were seized from Manjula Barot, Malhar Purohit, Rajesh Parmar and Gopal Pandey.

Last year also, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had in December seized about Rs 49 crore worth of demonetised notes from Bharuch. Three persons were arrested in the case.
