Cyclone Biparjoy Live Updates: Power to be restored in affected areas by June 20, says Amit Shah
Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday visited Gujarat and conducted aerial survey of areas affected due to cyclone Biparjoy. He was accompanied by Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel. Shah will also visit Kutch and Jakhau Port. He will also hold a meeting with CM and officials. Massive swathes of land in Kutch, as well as Saurashtra, were flooded with rain waters that gushed into houses, sending people’s belongings floating with scant chances of recovery. In Kutch alone, nearly 80,000 electricity poles collapsed while nearly 33,000 hectares of farmland have been affected. Cyclone Biparjoy has weakened into a 'deep depression' and is further expected to weaken into a 'depression' in the next 12 hours. Stay with TOI for all updates:

Several areas of Jalore and Barmer districts in Rajasthan witnessed heavy rain due to Cyclone Biparjoy, which moved towards the desert state following its landfall in Gujarat, officials said on Friday. A meteorological department official said 60-70 mm rains occurred at a few places on Thursday night and extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur in both the districts and adjoining areas on Friday.According to the official, 69 mm rainfall was recorded in Jalore till Friday morning.

Cyclone Biparjoy Live: Planes secured, teams on standby at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport
Soon after Cyclone Biparjoy hit the Gujarat coast late on Thursday, light to moderate rainfall lashed parts of Ahmedabad. A series of precautionary measures were taken by the airport operator at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad. In line with aviation protocols, smaller aircraft were secured using moorings whereas chokes and extra brakes were used on large aircraft parked at the SVPI airport to prevent the high-velocity cyclonic winds from displacing them.

Heavy rains and gusty winds at a speed of over 115-120 kilometres per hour created havoc in Gujarat's Morbi district, damaging over 300 electric poles, leading to power outage in around 45 villages, after Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in coastal areas of the state on Thursday evening. Officials with the Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL) said that efforts are underway to restore power in nine of the affected villages.

Due to high-velocity winds and rain, 25 trees were uprooted in various areas in the city. A hoarding came crashing down near Khodiyarnagar in Danilimda, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said.
The AMC statement said trees fell in areas including Lal Darwaza, Khadia, and Jamalpur. AMC noted that of the 25 trees that fell between 4pm and 7pm on Thursday, 19 were removed while the remaining were being removed.

Ahmedabad city and rural district education officers on Thursday ordered all schools, regardless of the board they are affiliated with, to remain closed on June 16 as precautionary measure in the wake of Cyclone Biparjoy.
The statement from DEOs said that all primary, secondary and higher secondary schools of Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) and other central boards will remain closed on Friday. The circular also asked the school staff to remain available to help at emergency shelters.

Cyclone Biparjoy News Live: Biparjoy longest-lived Arabian sea cyclone
The cyclone identified at 5.30am on June 6, that was later named Biparjoy with its intensification and northward journey, completed nine days and 16 hours as a cyclone at 9. 30pm on Thursday. It thus became the cyclone with the longest recorded lifespan in the Arabian Sea.
According to India meteorological department (IMD) data, Cyclone Kyarr in 2019 had a lifespan of nine days 15 hours, with Cyclone Gaja in 2018 having a similar lifespan. The very severe cyclonic storm Gaja of 2018, in the southeast Bay of Bengal, had a life span of nine days and 15 hours. It crossed the southern peninsular region, emerged into the Arabian Sea and weakened there, the IMD said.
