AHMEDABAD: It was a shock for bunch of youngsters puffing smoke in the plush hazy environment when the police raided three hookah bars in Panjrapol and Satellite areas of the city on Saturday night. Managers of the bars were arrested for violating the norms laid by the police commissioner for such establishments. The hookah bars, said sources, will be issued showcause notices on Monday, seeking explanation on why their licences should not be forfeited.
"According to rules, such establishments should have separate arrangement for smoking hookahs, which would be separate from the restaurant. In addition to that, the management also should ensure that minors are not allowed inside the bars," said Abhay Chudasama, Deputy commissioner of police, zone I. "We got a tip-off that the licence-norms were being violated at these bars following which we sent teams to check status. Most of the licences were issued after 2005. The process of cancelling their licences will be initiated with the issuance of show-cause notices," added Chudasama. Police arrested Pranav Nanda and Swapnil Palvi, owner and manager of Mocha near IIM in Vastrapur, Nilesh Barot, manager of Lounge 9 in Panjrapol and Dilip Mehta, manager of Arabian Nights at Wide Angle, SG Highway. They were later released on bail.
