AHMEDABAD: The bill imposing a ban on illegal slaughter of cows will come into effect from Monday. The Gujarat Animal Preservation Act-2011 (Amended) was passed in the last assembly session and cleared by the Gujarat governor recently. The state government officials announced that the bill would come to effect from
Dhanteras.
According to the bill, those found involved in illegal cow slaughter will be liable to be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined of Rs 50,000.
State government officials said that those directly or indirectly involved in the storage, transportation or sale of beef of illegally slaughtered cows would also be subjected to action.
"Officials of the level of police sub-inspectors have been appointed as competent authorities for the implementation of the act," said a senior government official. "According to the new law, those in animal husbandry and agriculture industries will have to disclose the number of animals, details of vehicles and their owners in a prescribed format to get permits for transportation of cows."
