AHMEDABAD: Doordarshan's office in the Drive-In area was swarming with cops hunting for terrorists armed to the teeth on Wednesday evening. This hunt did give passers-by and the office staff some tense moments, but finally turned out to be a mock drill for the Anti Terrorist Squad. A large team of police personnel swooped down on the television channel's premises, which police consider as one of the many "sensitive installations" in the city.
One superintendent of police, three deputy SPs, 10 police inspectors and one platoon of SRP toiled for more than an hour-and-a-half to first cordon off the building and then scour its offices for the terrorists.
"The terrorist attack on Akshardham had caught the Gujarat police flat-footed. The NSG commandos could shoot the two terrorists after they had killed 33 people. This mock drill was aimed at keeping the ATS officials on their toes," said a senior police official. "It was a mock drill, conducted to check the preparedness of the ATS police officials. Such mock drills could soon become a monthly feature. I sounded an alert at 5.25 pm and my officers were ready and off towards Doordarshan’s office within a span of four minutes," said Rajan Priyadarshi, inspector general of police, ATS. The mock drill, said sources, was part of a training schedule designed to upgrade the level of preparedness of ATS. Priyadarshi added, "We have started training programmes for the deputy superintendents of police, police inspectors and even some office staff of ATS to disassemble, reassemble during the use of automatic weapons like AK-47 rifles and light machine guns."
