Centre notifies special economic zone (SEZ) for Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited at Dholera

Ahmedabad: The Centre notified a special economic zone (SEZ) for Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited at Dholera, marking a key policy push to anchor India's semiconductor ambitions in Gujarat.The SEZ, spread across 66.16 hectares, will cater exclusively to electronic hardware and software, including IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS). The notification, issued by the department of commerce on April 9, follows approval from the board of approval, the apex decision-making body for SEZs. With this, five new SEZs in the semiconductor and electronics space have been notified so far. These include proposals by CG Semi, Kaynes Semicon, Micron Semiconductor Technology India and the Hubballi Durable Goods Cluster. Gujarat has seen a flurry of investments in semiconductor manufacturing, with Micron Technologies, Kaynes Semicon, CG Semiconductor and Tata among the key investors in the state. The Tata Group has proposed an investment of Rs 91,000 crore to establish the country's first semiconductor fabrication unit at the site. Officials said the project is likely to generate around 21,000 jobs, adding to the industrial momentum building in the Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR). The notification also indicates policy recalibration to attract capital-intensive chip projects. The govt last year reduced the minimum contiguous land requirement for SEZs in semiconductor and electronics component sectors from 50 hectares to 10 hectares, making such projects more viable.
