AHMEDABAD: The census 2011 report that has taken the population of Gujarat to 6 crore has a design touch from the National Institute of Design (NID). NID has lent its design expertise not only to make the report user friendly but also intends to bring the book to international standards and make it stand out from the rest when stacked on a book shelf.
NID has not only designed the cover of the 2011 census report, but has also gone to the finer details, including introduction of colour coding for different chapters, icons and graphic illustrations for accessibility of information with better flow.
The designers have also used icons for easy identification and categorization of maps and diagrams in the report.
Faculty of NID Rupesh Vyas, who steered the project said, "The major task was to design the report in a way which will make the complex statistical data accessible in a simple way to users. The report will be in use for the next 10 years. To complete the design in a very limited time was also a challenge for us."
NID has also suggested the method of binding, and the kind of paper to be used for printing for more durability and better quality. A student who is part of the design team, Sangeeta Balasubramani said, "Apart from better quality and durability of the materials, we have also kept in mind the easy availability of the material as the state level reports will be reproduced locally in each state. We wanted the book to look and feel good and attain international standards and stand out from the rest on a rack."
NID had earlier designed the data collection form for the census 2011 as well.
