AHMEDABAD: A local court has directed the state government to pay one Jayesh Thakker of Naroda gaam, a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for causing him grievous injury while trying to control law and order situation way back in February 1987.
The officer who led the operation then is presently Anti Terrorist Squad additional DG Rajan Priyadarshi, who was then the deputy commissioner of police (DCP).

“The court has also directed the state government to pay Thakker an additional interest of 9 per cent over the Rs 2 lakh compensation for a period of 17 years as well as Rs 10,000 as court expenses,” says Thakker’s lawyer Kapil Bhatt.
According to Thakker, who was a social worker in Naroda then had led an agitation against the sale of illicit liquor and protested against the police inaction in his locality.
“It was during this time that Priyadarshi along with an inspector and some policemen had assaulted me. Priyadarshi blinded me in my right eye by hitting me with a stick. I had filed a civil suit demanding compensation from the police department,” says Thakker.
Priyadarshi, however, said that there were some riotous incidents that broke out in various part of the city back in February 1987 and police had received information of certain unlawful assemblies in certain disturbed areas. Thakker’s was one of them. In the police action that followed, Thakker was injured.
