BHUJ/AHMEDABAD: Five persons two women and three children were killed in a blast that rocked Madhapar village near Bhuj on Sunday morning. The place where the blast occurred on the Bhuj-Madhapar road at 10.15 am was cordoned off by the police.
Those killed in the blast include Nanduben Padiya (30), Sumitra Bhuria (30), Anil (12), Prembai (8) and Sunil (5).
That the blast was right next to Bhuj Cantonment and the proximity of the site to the Indo-Pak border had caused much concern.
After cordoning off the road, the police carried out a search for other explosive materials with the help of sniffer dogs. However, nothing else was found.
"The deceased women used to collect and sell scrap and the minors, their children, were playing in front of their hut when the incident took place. Police teams have rushed to the spot along with forensic investigators," said IG (border range), Kutch, Rajan Priyadarshi.
He added preliminary investigations have shown the blast seems to have taken place when the children were playing with pieces of scrap. "One of the children may have banged a piece of scrap, causing it to explode," he said.
