AHMEDABAD: Noted historian Ramchandra Guha mounted a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleging that the party had scuttled his chances of joining a university in Ahmedabad as a professor for Gandhian studies. Guha took to the social media platform, Twitter, to vent his grievance. The tweet carried a link to a video of his public lecture on Gandhi and his legacy, delivered in Ahmedabad last Thursday.

“In October 2018, the ruling party made it impossible for me to take up a professorship in Gandhian studies in Ahmedabad. On January 30, 2020, I was able to visit the city to speak on Gandhi and his legacy,” mentioned the tweet posted by Guha on Monday at 2.28pm. This is the first time after a year and a half of the controversy that Guha came out in public citing clear reasons of his not joining the university.

When the issue came to light, the then office bearers of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student body attached to the BJP, had told TOI that they had “made a representation before the varsity officials to desist from any association with people who are anti-national.”

When contacted, AU vice chancellor,

Pankaj Chandra

, refused to comment on the matter.
