BJP bosses are showing clear signs of nervousness with the MP police giving clean chit to Sanjay Joshi.
RAJKOT/GANDHINAGAR: BJP bosses in Gandhinagar are showing clear signs of nervousness with the Madhya Pradesh police giving clean chit to top former party general secretary Sanjay Joshi in the sex CD scandal. Joshi was purportedly caught in a sex CD which was distributed ahead of the 25th anniversary celebrations of the BJP last December. A known opponent of Narendra Modi, Joshi was the state organising secretary before he was shifted to Delhi at the chief minister's behest.
Now, with the Forensic Science Laboratory, Hyderabad, declaring that the CD was a fake, the BJP higher-ups are in a tight spot. Party rebels, led by former-CM Keshubhai Patel, are sparing no effort to embarrass Modi.
They have asked the central leadership to start an inquiry into those responsible for making the fake CD. Joshi was forced to resign as the party general secretary as soon as the scandal broke. On Friday, home minister Amit Shah refused to comment on Joshi getting a clean chit from the MP police. When asked why the CD had to be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory of Hyderabad, instead of Gandhinagar, to check its authenticity, Shah said, "You must ask Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan."
Shah has frequently called the Gandhinagar FSL the best in the country and when pressed on the issue, he reacted sharply. On instituting a probe, Shah simply said, "I have no comment." Former chief minister Keshubhai Patel in a statement said, "Truth has won. Now we want to know about the culprits behind this conspiracy to malign Joshi." Another dissident leader, ex-home minister Gordhan Zadaphia, said in a statement that Joshi and the RSS have come out clean despite a "criminal conspiracy" against them. He demanded "exemplary punishment" for those responsible for distributing the CD. Veteran RSS pracharak Sooryakant Acharya, who was made a Rajya Sabha member last year with Modi's support, remained silent. "I have nothing to say in the matter." Senior dissident leader and former CM Suresh Mehta, on the other hand, told TNN that the central BJP should immediately give Joshi back his post. Mehta added he was going to ask BJP president Rajnath Singh to inquire into the scandal. Soon after the CD scandal broke, anonymous leaflets were distributed in the Sachivalaya accusing "top persons" in the Gujarat government of planning the conspiracy. It was also reported that telephone calls were made from the CM's office for distributing the CD at the BJP meet in Mumbai. The CM's office has strongly denied any involvement.
