AHMEDABAD: In its intensified efforts to flatten the garbage mount at Pirana, the city civic body has decided to set up more facilities at

project. The civic authority will set up a plant to convert organic municipal solid waste and also a facility to segregate and recover materials from solid waste. Each facility will have a capacity to process 500 tonnes of waste per day.
“We are setting up a compost manufacturing plant at Pirana. The planned facility will process 500TPD of organic waste and turn it into compost which can be sold or distributed free to farmers. The compost will also be used in the city’s gardens and urban forests,” a senior official of
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation
(
AMC
) said. The official said that the civic body is also setting up a facility to segregate mixed waste and recover materials from it. “This facility will also have a capacity to process 500TPD waste in a single shift,” the official said.
Earlier this month, the civic body invited bids to set up a 3,000 tonne per day capacity plant for composting and preparation of refused derived fuel (
RDF
) from waste. Between 2009 and 2013, the civic body had failed four times to set up facilities to convert waste-to-energy.
AMC collects around 3,300 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste which is sent to landfill sites at
Pirana
where the stockpile of legacy waste is around 1.25 crore tonnes.
“In the last one decade, the daily collection of waste has increased by 43.5%. In 2009, AMC’s daily waste collection used to be around 2,300 tonnes which has now increased to around 3,300-3,400 tonnes per day,” the official said.
The official said that while the civic body is stressing more on waste segregation right from the generation origin it has also intensified its effort to build more facilities at Pirana. Starting this month, the civic body has started free distribution of waste bins to citizens.
“We are distributing two waste bins, one for dry and the other for organic waste, to each household in the city. We hope that people will get into the habit of segregating their waste,” the official said.
