BJ Medical student dies by suicide in Ahmedabad hostel, note found
AHMEDABAD: Jiya Daki had done what thousands of students across India dream of: she had cracked NEET and earned a seat at one of Gujarat's most prestigious medical colleges.
At 19, she was in her second semester at BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad. However, on Monday afternoon, the first-year MBBS student was found hanging in her hostel room. In a three-page note to her parents, she had called herself "a failure".
The Shahibaug police have registered a case of accidental death.
Daki, a resident of Keshod in Junagadh, had moved into Room 527 of Devi Girls' Hostel in Shahibaug about five months ago, said inspector J H Sindhav. Despite being regular in attending classes, she had been struggling silently. Friends described her as an introvert who found it difficult to connect with others, the inspector said, adding: "No exams were held recently or scheduled soon."
The cops, on checking her room, found a diary in which she had kept a three-page handwritten note addressed to her parents. Daki called herself a "failure" and wrote that she felt alone and unable to make friends. She did not blame anyone else for her decision, said inspector Sindhav.
College authorities said that Daki had cleared NEET with high scores to earn her seat at BJ Medical College, one of Gujarat's most competitive medical institutions. "She rarely missed a class. She stayed away only on Monday," said police.
When Daki did not show up and no one noticed any movement from her room, college authorities were alerted. She was subsequently found hanging inside her room.
College officials said that her elder sister, who lives in Gandhinagar, was informed about the incident. The sister immediately rushed to the hospital and took Daki's body to her home town after postmortem.
"It is surprising that a girl who scored so well in NEET called herself a failure," the college authorities said.
The cops said that Daki's roommate and classmates will be questioned to understand more about Daki's state of mind leading up to the tragedy. Police also plan to examine Daki's mobile phone. Outside her reportedly sensitive nature, police said they have found no other apparent reason for the death.
