Ahmedabad: Married man rapes divorcee with nuptial lure

Ahmedabad: A 38-year-old divorcee who resides in Nava Vadaj has filed a police complaint alleging that a man lied about being divorced and repeatedly raped her by promising marriage.

The complaint was registered with Madhvpura police on Friday under BNS Section 69 (sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means). In her complaint, the woman stated she lives with her mother and younger son and was separated from her husband in 2023.

She alleged that in Nov 2025, she created a profile on a matrimonial platform “to remarry as she wanted to begin afresh”. In response, the man, a resident of Surat, contacted her and claimed that he too was divorced and wanted to remarry.

According to the complaint, the two first met in Dec 2025 at Kankaria and later in Surat, where he took her to the area where he lived and showed her his house from a distance.

She alleged that they subsequently visited a temple in Visnagar. She said that at the temple, the man “accepted me as his wife after we completed the ceremonial wedding. He applied vermilion to my head.”

The woman alleged that soon thereafter, the man called her to a hotel in Shahibaug and, by promising to formalize the marriage, had physical relations with her. She claimed he then called her to the same hotel five to seven times, and each time he assured her of marriage and had sex. She alleged the last such meeting was on April 13.

The complaint states that when she tried contacting him on April 18, another person answered, and on April 20 she went to his Surat residence and discovered that he was married and had two children.

The complainant stated that a heated argument with his wife ensued, after which the woman called 112 and was taken to Kapodra police station, before returning to Ahmedabad.
