A’bad has won CWG 2030 bid, now prepare for 2036 Olympics: Shah

Gandhinagar: Union home and cooperation minister Amit Shah said in Ahmedabad on Friday that even as Ahmedabad has won the bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the city should ready itself to welcome the 2036 Olympic Games as well.Speaking at the valedictory function of the Sansad Khelkud Mahotsav for the Gandhinagar LS constituency held at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, Shah said, "Gujarat has won the bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Residents of Ahmedabad, prepare yourselves for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games as well".He added, "I completely believe this, that when the Olympic Games are held in the country in 2036, India's medal tally will be among the top five nations." He added that over the next four years, Ahmedabad will be hosting 13 international sporting events, and Gujarat has created the country's biggest "sports movement".Shah said that the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex has become an international-level sports complex and over the past decade, many other such sports complexes have come up in the country. He said that in 2014, the Union govt's sports budget was Rs 800 crore, which increased to Rs 4,000 crore in 2025.Shah said that five years ago, PM Modi suggested an idea at a meeting of MPs that they should organise sports competitions in their respective constituencies. "Today, that idea is being implemented in 300 LS constituencies and is instrumental in identifying sporting talent across the country," Shah said.Earlier in the day, the Union home minister presided over a number of events in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. He inaugurated ‘Swadeshotsav 2025' organised by Swarnim Jagaran Manch and Swarnim Bharat Varsh Foundation. He also presided over Swadeshotsav 2025, inaugurated the Ahmedabad Shopping Festival, presided over the Earth Summit organised by NABARD, and inaugurated schools and lakes in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency.Shah will launch several development projects in Vav-Tharad and Banaskantha districts on Saturday.
