He was accompanied by his sister Parul Parekh and brother-in-law Rajendra Parekh. The car was driven by Savji Sonagra, 32, a resident of Jamnagar. Sonagra was working with a private travel agency.
The car had reached outside Changodar and was going towards Sarkhej at 7 am when the car driver lost control and rammed it into the canal boundary, off the road, head-on. Sonagra and Shah were killed because of the impact of the crash whereas Parul and Rajendra Parekh survived multiple fractures.
"We believe that Songara, who was driving continuously for more than seven to eight hours throughout the night, might have caught a wink and was distracted for a while when he lost control from the wheel and before he could control it, the car rammed into the concrete wall. The duo died on the spot due to the severe impact. The two injured have been shifted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad by emergency medical services ambulance," said a Changodar police station official.
According to Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) officials, it was a tough operation. "The entire front part was smashed and bodies of the two persons sitting in front were trapped inside the car. We had to cut the steering wheel, dashboard, two doors and parts of the car body to extract the bodies. The operation lasted around two hours," said a senior AFES official.
