AHMEDABAD: The 15-year-old boy, Shaktisinh Jhala, who was kidnapped on Tuesday night for Rs 2 crore ransom, was found murdered. His body was found in a well near Sanand on Thursday.
Cops suspect the involvement of four of his friends in the murder. Two of them — Sunil, 16, and Dilawar Mir, 40 — have been arrested. Sunil and Shaktisinh were classmates at New Era High School in Sanand.
Mir was arrested from Vadodara while Sunil was nabbed in Sanand. The abductors, say cops, are cough syrup addicts, had demanded a ransom of Rs 2 crore on Wednesday after which the boy's family reported the matter to Ahmedabad district police.
Shaktisinh's grandfather Manubha Jhala had finalised a multi-crore land deal recently. Police said Manubha is a prominent land agent of Sanand who also has other businesses in private financing.
The other two suspects — Pranav Patel, 22, and Asif Mir, 21 — are absconding. Mir, who lives in Bharuch, is Asif's uncle. When he was visiting Sanand a week ago, Asif had suggested that they could earn big money by abducting Shaktisinh. Police say that after the murder Mir left for Karjan in Bharuch. Before that, he called up Manubha from Lal Darwaza and demanded the ransom.
Deputy inspector general of police (Ahmedabad range) Ashish Bhatia said: "From the way the ransom call was made, we had suspected that these were amateur abductors. It was possible that Shaktisinh was killed on the night of his abduction." After the arrest of the duo, residents staged a protest in Sanand blaming cops for delayed action and blocked the Ahmedabad-Sanand highway. An angry mob also gheraoed the Sanand police station.
