Agra: A 21-year-old man died and a 40-year-old married woman suffered severe burn injuries in a mysterious fire on the roof of the woman's house in Turkman Gate area of Aligarh city on Monday evening. Deceased Farman Ahmed worked at a hardware-manufacturing unit owned by the woman's husband.
The two were found in critical condition by neighbours, who alerted police. They were shifted to a hospital, where doctors declared Farman dead on arrival. The woman, Nazreen, sustained serious burn injuries and was referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi where her condition was said to be critical.
Police said preliminary investigation suggested that the case might be linked to personal relationship, but officials did not rule out other angles, including suicide, accidental fire or foul play.
SP Mayank Pathak said, "Around 7 pm, Kotwali Nagar Police received information from Turkman Gate outpost regarding burn injuries sustained by two individuals, identified as Farman and Nazreen. Police reached the spot and shifted the injured to hospital, where a medical examination declared Farman dead, while Nazreen was referred to a hospital in Delhi for advanced treatment. Prima facie, there is no information indicating the presence of any third person in the house at the time of the incident.
"
Nagar Kotwali SHO Manoj Kumar said, "Families of both the victims have levelled allegations against each other. A case will be registered after the preliminary investigation is complete."
Farman's mother, Sayna Begum, said, "Nazreen adored my son and hence she invited him for ‘iftar' on Monday evening. Her husband, Waseem, did not like Farman, and he had threatened to kill him several times earlier."
On the other hand, Waseem also alleged that Farman tried to burn his wife to death and then immolated himself.
