Agra: A court here has sentenced a 35-year-old woman to life imprisonment for killing her 30-year-old lover by throwing acid on him on March 24, 2021. Additional district govt counsel (ADGC) Vijay Verma on Thursday said the court relied on the victim's dying declaration.
Verma said convict Sonam Pandey had allegedly called Devendra Kumar to her house on the pretext of repairing a fan, and after serving him tea, she threw acid on him, causing severe burns.
Devendra, who worked at a private hospital, later died in hospital after recording his statement, saying, "I lost consciousness after the acid attack. When I regained consciousness, I felt severe pain. Acid also entered my ear."
He also stated that he had been living with Sonam for four years and later found out that she was married and living separately from her husband.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim's mother, a case was registered under sections 326-A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by using acid), 302 (murder) of the IPC at Hariparvat police station in Agra. Sonam Pandey was arrested and has been in jail since then.
According to ADGC, the man who lived on rent in Shastri Nagar area of Agra city wanted to marry her, but the woman rejected his proposal.
"After hearing arguments from both sides and examining witnesses and evidence, the court of additional district judge Shiv Kumar on Wednesday sentenced Sonam Pandey to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 40,000," said ADGC Verma.
