AGRA: A 22-year-old newlywed woman on way to her in-laws' house in Aligarh from Delhi was molested by four men in the compartment of the special passenger train on Tuesday around midnight. When her husband objected, he was verbally abused by the miscreants. Despite her pleading for help, other passengers remained mute spectators.

Even after the couple alighted at Aligarh railway junction, the harassment continued. The miscreants beat her husband with belts when he tried to stop them.

Passengers watch silently as woman screams for help

Her screams for help finally drew the attention of other people on the platform, and police were alerted. The wife alleged that instead of taking action against the culprits, GRP personnel detained her husband initially. Relatives of the couple soon reached the station and staged a protest. Following the uproar, GRP released the husband and registered a case at Aligarh GRP police station against the culprits. Police said one of the accused, Jitu Sing, a resident of Usmanpur Khandauli in Agra, has been arrested. The other three, including Mahesh, a resident of Singh Kuberpur, are absconding. Two culprits have not been unidentified.

The woman said, "The goons started staring at me soon after the train departed from Delhi. When I objected, they tried to touch me. My husband tried to intervene but he was attacked. Though I pleaded for help, other passengers watched silently."

GRP SHO Shailendra Yadav said, "After the victim's husband filed a complaint, a case was registered under BNS sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 115- 2 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 352 (insult that provokes breach of peace)." The couple got married two months ago, and since then they have been residing in Delhi, where the man runs a business selling clothes. The couple had come to attend a wedding in the family.
