Mosques in Aligarh covered, security heightened ahead of Holi
Agra: At least three mosques in UP's Aligarh district have been covered with tarpaulin sheets as a precautionary measure during Holi celebrations that began on Monday. Officials said the move, following the local administration's outreach to the mosque committee members, was aimed at preventing any untoward incidents and ensuring communal harmony. The mosques include Halwaiyan mosque in Sabzi Mandi area, Rangrezan mosque in Babri Mandi area and another at Delhi Gate crossing.Speaking to the TOI, SP (city) Mrigank Shekhar Pathak said the coverings were done "voluntarily". "There are many non-official ones which may be covered, if the mutawalli decides. There is neither an official diktat to cover these nor an official date. The coverings will be removed when Holi ends," Pathak said, adding similar measures have been implemented in the previous years to uphold peace in the region. On the overall preparation for Holi, SSP Aligarh Neeraj Jadaun said, "People are requested not to forcibly apply colours on anyone. DJ operators have also been issued strict directives. Our senior officials and station house officers are on the field. Strict vigil is on."
