Heavy rains lead to surge in water level of seasonal rivers

Dehradun: Intense downpours during the late night hours on Sunday caused a sudden increase in the water levels of seasonal rivers and streams in the Simli region of Chamoli district. The rainwater, accompanied by mud and debris, inundated more than six houses and engulfed several vehicles in the vicinity.
The water levels of streams such as Josa and Tota surged at an alarming rate, causing fear and concern among the inhabitants of Simli and the surrounding areas as sludge entered the homes of Narendra Bisht and other residents in the affected region.
Nand Kishore Joshi, district disaster management officer of Chamoli, said the work to remove mud and debris in the affected area was completed by Monday evening. "Besides, there is a provision of giving Rs 5,000 financial assistance to people owning houses where debris or sludge has entered. We have distributed the amount to the affected persons," said Joshi.
The disaster management officer also confirmed that all major routes in the district are accessible for vehicular traffic. "Some roads like Simli-Gwaldam NH route, where landslides were witnessed leading to road blockage. The debris has been removed on all major routes of the districts," he said.
