Agra:A 30-year-old police constable posted in Agra died, and his friend was critically injured after their car plunged into a canal when the constable lost control of the vehicle on a narrow, poorly lit road while returning to Kinmasa village under Gonda police station in Aligarh district around midnight on Sunday.
Durgesh Kumar and his friend Lokendra Kumar, 32, were rushed to JN Medical College, where Durgesh was declared dead on arrival, and Lokendra remains under medical care. A police rescue operation retrieved the car and its occupants from the canal using a JCB at around 2:30 am.
Police suspect the car had been submerged for a significant period, as both victims were found unconscious. Durgesh Kumar, who was posted at Jaitpur police station in Agra, had come home on leave. On Saturday night, he and Lokendra had gone to the market and were returning to Kinmasa village when the accident occurred.
Superintendent of police (Crime), Mamta Kuril, said, "The road was dark and narrow, which caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the car falling into the canal. The constable's body has been sent for postmortem examination. Further investigation is underway, and appropriate action will be taken."
