Agra mosque chairperson accused of issuing death threats, FIR filed

Agra: An FIR has been filed against the chairperson of the Shahi Jama Masjid Intizamia Committee in Agra for allegedly issuing death threats and using abusive language during a phone call on Dec 10. A police case has been registered, and the incident is under investigation.
In his complaint filed at the Mantola police station, Aslam Karim, a resident of Nagla Kali, Shamsabad Road, and a member of the mosque's management committee said Mohammad Zahid, the chairman, abused him and threatened to kill him if he visited the mosque. The complainant also provided a recording of the phone call as evidence.
Karim said Zahid, who was recently removed from the chairperson's post by a majority vote, used derogatory language. He also expressed fear for his life and sought police intervention. The police are currently examining the evidence and are expected to announce further steps soon.
DCP Suraj Rai said, "Prima facie, the allegations appear to be true. A case has been registered under BNS sections 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation). The matter is being investigated in detail, and further action will be taken based on the evidence."
Zahid refuted the allegations, saying, "I legally hold the chairperson's position under the Sunni Central Waqf Board. These allegations are baseless and part of a smear campaign to cover financial irregularities. The complainant is an aide of the mosque committee secretary, Azam Malik, who has failed to account for funds generated from shop rents."
