Two men in their early 20s were arrested for the murder on Friday.

Muzaffarnagar SP (city), Satyanarayan Prajapat, said on Friday, "The child's body with a long cloth sleeve of a shirt tied around his neck was found in a sugarcane field near the forest under Sikhera limits, about 100 to 125 metres away from the village road. Some candy and a blade used to slit the boy's throat were found. Local residents soon gathered at the site and the cops noticed that one of them was wearing a shirt with only one sleeve, and the other one was perhaps torn off. The suspect, who introduced himself as the boy's distant nephew, was taken for questioning."

Prajapat added: "The man then admitted that he and another person (both from the same village) had slit the boy's throat after he resisted their advances and left him to die in a farm. An FIR under the BNS section of murder was subsequently registered and the two men were arrested."

The child had come to his maternal grandparents' home for the Dussehra festival and went missing from the place around 9am on Thursday. After receiving a call from an "anonymous" villager, two police teams were formed by SSP Abhishek Singh to expedite the investigation process and the torn shirt sleeve led them to the "killers".
