Agra: An NGO has brought relief to five convicts, who were forced to remain in Muzaffarnagar jail even after completing their jail term. Apparently, the five persons failed to pay their respective fine amount and hence were not being released. The NGO paid off their fine amount and helped them come out of the prison.
Police sources said one of the convicts, Mudassir Khan, was booked under the Arms Act and was sentenced to six months jail term but he had to spend another month in jail for failing to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. He was released after the non-profit organisation paid his penalty.
Similarly, another prisoner who completed a one-year sentence for theft was apparently being forced to spend another two months in jail for non-payment of his fine. He was released after the organisation paid his penalty of Rs 2,000.
Muzaffarnagar jail superintendent, Sitaram Sharma, said, “All the five prisoners belong to Muzaffarnagar and Shamli districts. More people should come forward to help such inmates.” Nadir Rana, a social worker associated with the organisation, said, “The jail administration helped us to bring out all the five prisoners. We are also looking for such prisoners in adjoining districts so that we could help them.”
