Agra: A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping his one-and-a-half-year-old niece and sustained a bullet injury following an encounter with police in UP's Muzaffarnagar late Thursday night.
Police said the maternal uncle of the toddler on Thursday took her out on the pretext of buying her biscuits to an isolated location, where he allegedly violated her. He later abandoned the injured child on the doorstep of her house before fleeing. The girl was taken to hospital where doctors said her condition was stable and discharged her after treatment. A case was registered under section 65(2) (rape) of BNS and provisions of Pocso Act.
Late that night, the accused was intercepted during a vehicle check drive during which he allegedly opened fire on police, prompting them to retaliate in self-defence. "The accused sustained a bullet injury to his leg in the exchange and was taken to hospital under police custody. Legal proceedings have been initiated," said DSP Ramashish Yadav.
SHO said, "An illegal country-made pistol, a live cartridge and an empty cartridge were recovered from his possession, following which BNS section 109 (attempt to murder) and Arms Act were added to the FIR. Further investigation is underway and action will be taken accordingly."
