According to Raju, a resident of Padampur village, his son Kush was suffering from fever and was being treated by a private doctor in Mainpuri, on Saturday night. “The doctor was treating him till I had money in Rs 100 notes but once I ran out of them and had only a Rs 500 note left, he advised me to take Kush to a government hospital where my currency would be accepted,” he said.
Raju said with no option left, he took his son away and Kush died shortly afterwards. Though district magistrate Chandrapal Singh has formed a committee of doctors to investigate the matter, it offers no solace to the father.
A profusely crying Raju told media that his son could still be alive if he had money to pay for his treatment. Following the incident, the DM has ordered free treatment in government hospitals for three days from November 14 to 16. He has also issued an order to the community health centres and hospitals not to charge any money from patients.
DM Chandrapal Singh told TOI, “A two-member committee has been formed to investigate the matter. Action will be taken accordingly.”

In his letter the DM has said though the daily need of fresh currency, following the demonetization, in the district is Rs 25 crore, banks had been received only Rs 30 crore for the past three days.
According to the public relations officer of the district, around 95% of ATMs are non-functional. There are a total of 127 branches of various banks in the district but majority of them have no Rs 100 or Rs 50 notes. More than Rs 150 crore has been deposited in various banks and post offices in the district till now.
